Origins: Mexico in the 16th century (although there is plenty of disagreement about this. You can find more details on this in my Chihuahua Information article).

Common Misspellings: Chiwawa, Chiuahua, Chihuaha

Short Haired Chihuahuas

Long Haired Chihuahuas

A short haired Chihuahua's coat is smooth and glossy while a long haired Chihuahua coat should is soft and either flat or slightly curly.

Coat Color: These come in a whole variety of colors including back, fawn, silver, sand, white and chestnut and may also be marked or splashed

Shedding: Minimum To Average

Feeding: Chihuahuas have small, delicate stomachs and require a balanced diet which low in fats and oils. For this reason it is best not to feed them canned commercial dog foods as these contain a whole range of fatty fillers which produce a build up of fat around a Chihuahua's key internal organs which will cause health problems and in many cause will shorten your Chi's life.

Home cooked meals are the best way to feed your Chihuahua if you want her to lead a long life. Most people don't realize how quick and easy preparing homemade meals for your dog is once you know what to cook. For an excellent selection of over 200 recipes, Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes is an excellent resource for keeping your Chi healthy, happy and safe.

Health Problems: Chihuahuas are at risk from a number of health problems. These include heart disease, hydrocephalus, hypoglycemia, patella luxation, hip dysplasia and a collapsing trachea.

You can get more information about these and other conditions including the symptoms to watch out for and how to treat and prevent these problems from arising, by going to the Chihuahua Health Care Directory.

Training: Chihuahuas are intelligent dogs and so are easy to train as long as you use the proper training methods. House training is a little more difficult than other dog breeds but with a little patience all but the most stubborn of Chihuahuas can be house broken. For more information on Chihuahua training, my article on How To Train A Chihuahua is a good place to start.

Exercise: Chihuahua requires 30 – 60 minutes exercise a day. You can either take your Chi for a walk or exercise their mind as well as their body by playing games indoors.

Ideal Living Conditions: Chihuahuas are ideal for people who want a dog but live in an apartment. They don't like the cold and need a warm and soft place to sleep.

Dangers: Chihuahuas often don't relate well to small children and can snap and bite if they feel threatening.

Related Dog Breeds: Pekingese, Papillon, Pomeranian, Yokshire Terrier.

Fun Chihuahua Facts: Did You Know…

Chihuahuas are officially the smallest dog breed in the world.

When compared the size of their bodies, a Chihuahua's brain is the biggest out of any other breed.

Chihuahuas were considered sacred and godlike buy the Aztec and ancient Toltec tribes of Mexico. They were also used as hot packs to cure pains and aligments!

The Taco Bell Chihuahua is a 8 pound female called Gidget.

The first Chihuahua was registered by the AKC in 1904.

Myth Busting: "Untrue Chihuahua Facts"

Myth #1: Chihuahua's CAN'T Cure Asthma.

Like most old wives' tales no one really knows where this came from but any evidence "proving" this to be true is anecdotal at best and a number of scientific studies have been unable to find any link between Chihuahua and an asthma cure.

Myth #2: If You Get A Chihuahua Really Worked Up His Eyes Will Pop Out.

You can scarcely believe that some people actually think this to be true and even if your Chihuahua's eyes are bulging with excitement, I promise you you don't have to worry about them falling out!

Myth #2: Teacup Chihuahua Are Just A Really Small Chihuahua Breed Type.

According to the AKC official dog breed classification, there is no such thing as a Teacup Chihuahua breed type and this term (along with "minture" and other related terms) is purely a marketing invention.

All About Chihuahuas

If you are thinking about owning a Chihuahua or are just looking for some information on Chihuahuas then you have come to the right place.

In this article I will take you through the essentials of Chihuahua ownership and care including a description of their temperament, where they come from, how to train and exercise them and also any health problems you need to be on the look out for.

Chihuahua Breed Information

Chihuahuas are part of the toy breed and can be divided into two breed types – shorted haired chihuahuas and long hair haired Chihuahuas. They are known as the world's smallest dog breed and have a well rounded, apple shaped head and a muzzle which is short and pointed. Chihuahua puppies have a soft spot known as a molera on their heads when born which closes as they become adult but remains a weak spot throughout their lives. They usually have either a level or a scissors bite and large, erect ears which will flair to the sides when the dog is relaxed. One of the most notable characteristics of Chihuahuas is their large, round eyes which can make even the hardest heart melt. These are set far apart and are usually dark or ruby in color. A Chihuahua's nose is short and pointed and their tail is a long sickle shape which either loops over the back or off to the side. A Chihuahua's coat could be any number of colors including back, fawn, silver, sand, white and chestnut and may also be marked or splashed.

Chihuahua History

Although the general consensus is that Chihuahua came from Mexico in the 16th Century, there is still plenty of disagreement surrounding their origins. Some people believe that Chihuahua's were first bred in Egypt around 1000 B.C. while others argue that Chihuahuas originally came from the Mediterranean and were brought to Mexico around the time of the Spanish conquest. Regardless of the actual place of origin, it is a fact that the Short Haired Chihuahua was discovered in the town of Chihuahua, Mexico by American tourists in the 19th Century who introduced the breed to the USA. Breeders then cross bred this short haired type with other toy breeds such as the Pekingese or Pomeranian to create the Long Haired Chihuahua.

The Chihuahua Temperament

Chihuahuas are lively, loyal, intelligent, spunky, playful and friendly dogs. They can also be irritable, unsociable, territorial and downright vicious if not training properly. A Chihuahua's greatest quality is his intense devotion to his owner which has earned the Chihuahua breed the title of most loyal of canine companions. This can often manifest itself as separation anxiety in the early years of your life together since Chihuahuas not only give affection, they also demand it.

Chihuahuas are instinctively wary of strangers and other dog breeds. This makes them excellent watch dogs since despite their small statue, they are not afraid to raise hell and threaten mayhem if they feel that they, you or their home is under threat from invasion or attack. While this natural suspicion is a healthy, you will most likely have to work with your Chihuahua on socialization techniques to avoid them biting your friend's ankles or attacking other dogs when you are out and about.

Chihuahuas and small children are not a good mix (unless raised together) as they may bite if your child is too rough with them. Chihuahuas love to sun bathe and are quite happy to bask for hours in the sun so you need to be wary of sun stroke!

Chihuahua Training Info

Many people believe that training a Chihuahua is difficult. This is not true and any problems you have training a Chihuahua are not the fault of the dog but the training methods used. Chihuahuas are intelligent, quick witted dogs and under the right conditions and with proper training they learn very quickly and respond extremely well to positive reinforcement training.

The exception to this is house training which often requires a little more time and patience than other dog breeds. However, with the right training strategies most people are able to house break their Chi within a couple of months.

It is particularly important to socialize Chihuahuas early on in their life otherwise you will find that they are very aggressive towards strangers and other dogs. You should expose your Chihuahua to many different places, people and animals from an early age and quickly establish yourself as the pack leader to prevent your Chi from develop behavioral issues. Chihuahuas are strong willed dogs and are more than happy to become "your" master. to avoid this should treat you Chi no differently than you would larger dog breeds. This is often difficult for people as their Chi's large, saucer eyes and cute little face can make anyone weak at the knees. However, if you want an obedient, well behaved, friendly little companion it is important to follow the same training routine as you would any other dog.

To learn how to training a Chihuahua at home, have a look at my Chihuahua Training article.

Chihuahua Exercise Information

Chihuahuas do not need as much exercise as most other larger dog breeds. Usually a 30 – 60 minute daily walk should be enough to keep a Chihuahua strong, health and stave off obesity. It is better to use a body harness and not a dog collar when walking a Chihuahua since their necks are very delicate and can be damaged easily if pulled on a leash. Chihuahua don't like the cold so if it a little nippy outside, it is best to dress them in a sweater.

A play session at home is also an excellent way of exercising a Chihuahua and even if you do walk you Chi daily, it is still a good idea to schedule half an hour or so to challenge your Chihuahua mentally with toys or simple games.

Chihuahuas are intelligent, quick witted dogs and need just as much mental stimulation as they do physical exercise. if you don't challenge your Chihuahua's brain on a regular basis, you will find that he quickly becomes bored and lethargic when can lead to health problems.

Chihuahua Health Problems

Chihuahuas are a long-lived breed but sadly are at risk from a number of health issues. these should not stop you owning a Chihuahua since all dog breeds are susceptible to particular health conditions and if you know what these are in advance, you can take the necessary steps to treat your Chi as soon as the problem arises.

Many health conditions can be prevented altogether if follow my recommended Chihuahua Care Tips. It is a good idea to know the specific health problems Chihuahuas are at risk from since the earlier you catch an illness or disease they better chance your Chi will have of a full and successful recovery.

Chihuahuas are at particular risk from heart disease, hydrocephalus, hypoglycemia, patella luxation, hip dysplasia and a collapsing trachea.

You can get more information about these and other conditions including the symptoms to watch out for and how to treat and prevent these problems from arising, by going to the Chihuahua Health Care Directory.

Chihuahua Care Info

Compared to many other dog breeds, Chihuahuas are low maintenance dogs. However, there are a number of things to remember if you want him to have a happy, healthy and long life.

Chihuahua have minimal grooming needs. Short haired Chihuahuas need to be brushed once a week but it is better to groom long haired Chihuahua 2-3 times a week. All Chihuahuas need a bath once a month and it important to make sure no water gets in your Chi's ears. Chihuahuas dislike the cold and it is good idea to dress him in a sweater on cool days. Chihuahuas are small, delicate dogs and to prevent injuries, it is a good idea to prevent children playing roughly with or carry a Chihuahua. For the same reason, as much as your Chi may love it do not allow him to jump off high places into your arms as this could result in serious injury. Feeding your Chihuahua a healthy diet of nutritionally rich food is the most important aspect of Chihuahua care. You should feed your Chi small regular meals as opposed to one big daily meal and avoid the dangers of many commercial dog foods.

For a complete guide to everything you need to know about caring for happy and health Chi, see my article on Chihuahua Care.

Everything You Need To Know About Recognizing Pregnancy Symptoms and Caring For Your Pregnant Chihuahua Week By Week So That Her Pregnancy, Labor & Birth Is Successful & Safe

It is a fact that a pregnant Chihuahua is more at risk from complications during the pregnancy and labor cycle than most other dog breeds. However, this does not mean that you shouldn't breed your Chi or that every Chihuahua pregnancy is going to have problems.

While it is true that some Chihuahuas will experience complications and may need to give birth by Caesarean Section, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of this happening to your Chihuahua and give her the best possible chance of having a successful, safe and comfortable pregnancy and birth, simply by following the pregnancy care information I discuss in this article.

For a complete & comprehensive guide of the health problems your newborn Chihuahua puppies may suffer from, how diagnose and prevent them, you can download my FREE Report “The Top 20 Dog Health Problems And How To Prevent Them” simply by signing up in the box below.

Chihuahua Pregnancy Symptoms

"Is My Chihuahua pregnant?"
"How can you tell when your Chihuahua is Pregnant?"

They are common questions and the earlier you can spot that your Chihuahua is pregnant, the better prepared you'll be to give her the care and attention she needs for a smooth pregnancy and birth.

Some people opt for an ultra sound session to check if their Chi is pregnant but this is an expensive process and there are a number of key pregnancy signs you can look for at home, which will give you a good idea if your Chi is expecting:

Loss of Energy – Your Chihuahua will become tired quickly and will act lethargic

Increased Appetite – You will notice your Chihuahua becoming more hungry than usual or is picky with what she eats.

Enlarged Stomach – Her stomach will enlarge rapidly and become hard. This will happen much faster than with a human mother and also other dog breeds.

Frequent Urination – She will urinate more often because of her enlarged uterus.

Enlarged Nipples – Her nipples will become enlarged and protrude from her body. They may also darken in color. Again, this will happen quickly.

As soon as notice some or all of these pregnancy symptoms, you should take your Chihuahua to your vet so that he can confirm that your Chi is indeed expecting pups. If he confirms what you suspected then "congratulations!" your Chi is going to be a mother. Now you should focus on giving her everything she needs for a safe and comfortable pregnancy.

How Long Are Chihuahuas Pregnant For?

A Chihuahua pregnancy usually lasts between 58 and 66 days or approximately 9 weeks. However, a Chihuahua's gestation period can often be shorter if her puppies grow too big for her womb. You should consult with your vet how your Chihuahua's pregnancy is developing and when the possible due date will be. If you know the date of insemination, you can mark this on your calendar so you know in advance when she should give birth. If your Chi's pregnancy goes over 70 days, you should consult with your vet immediately as this could be a sign of complications.

Chihuahua False Pregnancy

These are rare but sadly, you do occur and you need to know how to spot them. A false pregnancy is triggered by an imbalance of chemicals in your Chi which provokes her body into "thinking" it is pregnant. When this occurs, her stomach will enlarge, her nipples will harden and she may begin producing milk.

Since false pregnancy symptoms are similar to those of a real pregnancy, it is difficult to know immediately if your Chi's pregnancy is real or false. However, if it is false, within one month of these symptoms appearing, they will start to fade and everything and your Chihuahua will return to normal.

Chihuahua Pregnancy Stages Week By Week

Your Chihuahua's pregnancy calendar will be similar to most other dog breeds and there are a number of key date to make note of:

1 – 4 weeks (1 – 30 days)

During this period, the unborn embryos are forming in your Chi's womb and you should continue to exercise and feed your dog as normal. However, it is also a good idea to use this time to make the necessary preparations for the coming weeks as your Chihuahua will require some special treatment particularly when it comes to what you feed her. I explain all about this in the section below 'Caring For A Pregnant Chihuahua'.

5 – 6 weeks (31 – 45 days)

You should start switching your Chihuahua's daily meals to a higher calorie diet and remove any excess fats or oils such as those you get in most commercial dog foods. If you don't do already, you should feed your dog small meals regularly throughout the day and avoid giving your Chihuahua supplements such as calcium as many vets will tell you that these may cause gestation problems.

During this period, you should also reduce your Chihuahua's amount of exercise to half an hour a day or less depending on the size of the dog and begin making sure she is getting enough rest.

6 – 7 weeks (45 – 55 days)

Around 45 days or 6 and a half weeks into your Chihuahua's pregnancy term, the puppies will be developed enough to see on an x-ray or ultra sound and you'll be able to tell how many puppies your dog is having.

8 – 9 weeks (56 – 66 days): As your Chihuahua nears the end of her pregnancy cycle, you should closely monitor her body temperature since when her temperature drops below 100oF, you'll know that the labor process will begin within 24 hours.

Caring For A Pregnant Chihuahua

One of the most important things you can do for your Chihuahua to make sure that her pregnancy is safe and successful is take her for regular check up with your vet and follow any specific advice he gives you. This is vital for the health of your both your Chihuahua and her puppies. Your vet will weigh her, worm her and make certain all her vaccinations are up to date. Schedule regular check ups and pay close attention to any specific advice he gives you about your Chihuahua's health.

It is very important to remember that pregnant Chihuahuas do need more help than most other dog breeds to stay healthy throughout their pregnancy term. I have listed below the four key principles of Successful Chihuahua pregnancies.

"The 4 Principles Of Successful Chihuahua Pregnancies"

1. Treat Her Gently

Make sure that anyone who comes into contact with your Chihuahua is extremely gentle with her.

2. A Comfortable Place To Rest

Your Chihuahua will probably have this already, but it is very important to make sure the place she sleeps in is comfortable, soft and warm. Set up her crate or bed in a quiet, stress free environment so that she can get all the rest she needs without being disturbed. This will be a big help in avoiding any possible complications like a reabsorption of the fetuses early in her pregnancy term.

3. Feed Her The Right Food

This is the most important thing you can do to give your Chihuahua the best possible chance of seeing her pregnancy through successfully. In order for her to stay healthy and breed strong and healthy puppies, she must have the right balance of fats, calories and vitamins. Do not feed her excessive fats or oils like those found in most commercial dog foods as this can result in a build up of fat around her key organs and place further stress on her already strained body.

Homemade food is the best way to feed your pregnant Chi as this way you can be certain exactly what you are feeding her. Most people don't realize how quick and easy it is to prepare home cooked meals for your Chihuahua once you know what to feed her. For an excellent selection of over 200 recipes, Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes is an excellent resource for keeping your Chi healthy, happy and safe during her pregnancy.

It is also important that as your Chi nears whelping, you increase her food intake until she is getting one and a quarter times her typical daily portion.

4. Avoid Over-Exercise

For most pregnant Chihuahuas, a half an hour walk or a short play session is ample daily exercise. Some smaller Chis may not even need this and you should watch carefully to see when your dog is becoming tired to find out exactly how much exercise your Chi needs.

Avoid all heavy duty dog training and obedience classes during pregnancy as anything which is strenuous or physically demanding, could cause harm to the unborn puppies.

Chihuahua Whelping: Danger Signs

If this is your first time caring for a Chihuahua during whelping, I recommend that you have your Chi give birth in a clinic. However, if you prefer to have your dog give birth at home then there are four very important waring signs you should pay attention to:

Your Chihuahua has been pregnant for 70 days and has yet to give birth.

24 hours has passed since her temperature dropped below 100oF but has not entered labor.

1 puppy has been born but over 2 hours has passed without any other puppies coming out.

Your Chihuahua experiences significant pain during birth.

If your Chihuahua experiences any of these you should call your vet immediately.

Chihuahua Whelping: Preparation & Build-up

If your Chihuahua is not having a Cesarean and you have decided to have a home birth, then following the steps below will mean that your Chihuahua will be as comfortable as possible during her labor and you can experience the joy of watching your Chi gives birth to newborn pups.

About a week before your Chihuahua's expected due date you should prepare a quiet whelping area which is completely free from distractions or stress. It is up to you when you move your Chi to this area, but I would recommend at least of couple of days before just in case she goes into early labor.

The day before her expected due date, make sure you take her temperature every 4 hours since when her temperature drops below 100oF you'll know she is within 24 hours of whelping.

Another important sign that your Chi is close to whelping is her behavior will change. She might clean herself more than usual and right before she is about to go into labor, she will start chewing at her bedding or digging at the blanket; this is known as "nesting" and is the best indication that your Chihuahua is to give birth.

At this point you should have a vet's emergency number on hand just in case and pay close attention to any of the warning signs I mentioned above.

Chihuahua Whelping: Labor & Giving Birth

When your Chi starts to pant heavily, you'll know she is entering labor.

During the birth, you should watch for any signs of undue stress but for the most part, you should not interfere. The puppies will begin to emerge once her water has broken. Puppies are usually born every 30 minutes or so although it is not unusual to wait an hour between births.

Your dog will typically break the membrane over each puppy and sever the umbilical cord herself although in rare cases you may need to step in. She may also eat the umbilical cord and placenta once the final puppy has come out. This is her natural instinct at work and you shouldn't stop her doing this.

Once the final puppy has been born you should allow the new mother to rest.

I know you've seen it – you might have been in the park, or at a friends house or in a coffee shop. Across from you is another Chihuahua and their owner. The Chi is calm and content, happy in both the company of their owner and strangers. You can tell the owner doesn't have to worry about their dog pooping in the wrong place and that if the owner leaves their departure won't be accompanied by desperate yapping or whining. When the owner give an order their Chi immediately obeys it and you are left with one single thought:

"Why can't my Chihuahua be like that?"

A Chi who acts as cute as he or she looks is a beautiful thing and the truth is that this can be your Chihuahua. All you need is three things:

The right understanding of how your Chihuahua's mind works

Proven training techniques & strategies

Some training aids

Consistent training

Chihuahuas are quite different from most other dog breeds and you need learn the specific training methods which work for them.

Many Chihuahua owners make one huge mistake which stops them from ever properly training their dog: they forget that their dog doesn't speak their language.

This may sound a little strange but a dog's experience of the world is similar to yours when you go to a foreign country. You may understand a few basic words like "hello" "thank you" "food" "restroom" because you hear them repeatedly in a similar context but you don't speak the language and if alternative word is used you are quickly confused.

This is the same experience for a dog has and many people forget this.

Chihuahua Training

Command Confusion…And How To Avoid It.

A common example of a word that confuses a lot of dogs is "down." The correct usage for this command is when you want your dog to "lie down." However, people also use it when they want their dog to "get off the bed" or "don't jump up."

When this word is used to mean three things, you can imagine how confuse your Chihuahua is going to be. Consistently is key if you want your Chi to be properly trained and in the example I've given above, you would use "down" to mean only "lie down" and nothing else.

If you want your Chihuahua to get off the bed, you would use the command "off" instead of "down" and if you want your Chi to stop jumping up you would use the command "no jump" or "floor."

Becoming The Alpha Dog

Along with consistency, it is crucial that you establish early on in your relationship with your Chihuahua that you are master.

This has nothing to do with being overly dominant, cruel or too strict. Dogs have a natural and instinctive need to be part of a pack. This is a key part of their DNA and from only a couple of months of age, your Chi will start to test its surroundings and it owner to establish where it stands in the pack order.

For your Chihuahua, this early test of dominance is vital to make sure that the the strongest pack leader is in place. I go into much more detail about this in my Chihuahua Training Report but if your dog decide that it is the strongest of the pack it will go ahead and assume that role and you will have a nightmare on your hands.

It is up to you to assume the role of pack leader and give your Chi the safety and reassurance he or she needs.

Here are five important rules which will help you to establish that you are the pack leader in your Chi's life:

g"The 5 Pillars Of Obidence Training"

Never Let Your Chihuahua Lead – Your dog must always follow. For example, if your Chi is begging for food, do not reward this. Instead, wait for them to stop begging and then give them something to eat.

Do Not Give Up With A Command – this will be quite challenging at first but if you persist, your Chihuahua will learn must faster. For example, if you call your Chi to come but then they do not sit when you give the command, do not give up. Wait a few seconds, and then give the "sit" command again. Eventually your Chi will learn and understand and you give praise him.

You Should Always Begin Any Interaction With Your Chi & Finish It – This is more important when your Chihuahua is still a puppy and is still learning. For example if you are talking to someone else and your dog try to butt in, tell them to lie and wait until you are finished talking before you can give your Chi your full attention.

Try Not To Give Into Your Chi's Every Wish – as difficult as this is, try not to give your Chihuahua an extra treat just because they're so cute. This will confuse your dog about who is in fact the pack leader. If your Chi whines while he is in his crate, don't let him out just because you feel sorry for him. He will only whine louder the next time and he will never be crate trained.

Make Sure You talk, touch and pet your Chi regularly – This also include giving praise when it has been earned and establishes a bond of trust between you. For example, when you are training him and he does something correctly, praise and rub along the side of head and around the ears. Most Chis love this and he will be eager to please you again.

Thank you for taking the time to sign up for my Dog Health Problems Guide.

I expect you’re pretty keen to dive in and download your copy. This is a really easy process and I’m going to guide you through it step by step.

Let’s Get Started

= > > Download “The Top 20 Dog Health Problems” Here < < =

Download Instructions

Your new Dog Health Problems Guide is an electronic book. Most people call it an ebook and you can download it right to your computer so you can read it any time you want.

If this is your first time downloading an ebook from the internet, read these instructions in full BEFORE you follow them. If you make a mistake, don’t worry. You can keep on trying for as many times as you need until you get it right.

Step 1

With your right mouse button, click on the link below:

= > > Download “The Top 20 Dog Health Problems” Here < < =

(If you are a Mac user you can just click the link as normal & the report will be downloaded automatically to your computer)

Step 2

You’ll then see a little menu appear and one of the options will say…

“Save Target As”

…this is the one you want to highlight and then click the mouse.

Step 3

You’ll then be taken to another screen. You’ll be asked WHERE you’d like to save the report on your computer. You’ll be able to choose which folder you’d like to put it in. It’s not too important where you put it. Just somewhere you’ll remember when you want to go and open it.

Step 4

Once you click on the SAVE button on that screen, the report will automatically download and save itself in the folder you selected. A little display will come up within the ‘File Download’ screen that shows you the progress of your download.

It should take no more than a few minutes to download the report although if you have a slower internet connection it may take a little while longer.

Step 5

To read the book, you will need some software. It’s called Adobe Acrobat Reader and the good news is it’s 100% free and is also usually already installed on most computers.
